Below are recommendations for downtown revitalization within the Guiding Gainesville Comprehensive Plan as presented during the Public Workshop held on Monday, September 8th. Use the lavender buttons to switch between goals & objectives.
Please review each recommendation and use the contact form at the bottom of the page to submit any feedback you may have no later than September 30th. Your feedback will help us determine the final recommendations that will be included in the Guiding Gainesville Comprehensive Plan.
Establish Downtown Gainesville as an official State Cultural District
Objective: Leverage arts, culture, and history to strengthen the local economy and create a distinct identity for downtown.
1.1.1 Formally pursue and obtain the official Cultural District designation from the Texas Commission on the Arts, and implement a district-branded wayfinding and signage program.
Celebrate and Share Gainesville’s Rich History
Objective: Create engaging and accessible ways for residents and visitors to experience the stories of historic downtown.
1.2.1 Develop and launch a comprehensive historic walking tour program, featuring both self-guided options (via a mobile app or printed maps) and volunteer-led tours.
Make Downtown the Premier Hub for Entertainment and Events
Objective: Increase foot traffic and economic activity by establishing a year-round calendar of engaging events and activities.
1.3.1 Develop and fund a collaborative Downtown Activation Program that includes: 1) A coordinated marketing strategy to promote all downtown happenings, 2) The creation of new signature festivals, and 3) Partnerships with local organizations to sponsor live entertainment.
Create an Inviting and Walkable Downtown Experience
Objective: Enhance the safety, comfort, and beauty of downtown streets for pedestrians.
1.4.1 Implement a downtown streetscape improvement program focused on adding pedestrian-scale lighting, benches, public art, and other amenities that encourage people to stroll and gather.
Protect and Showcase Downtown’s Historic Architecture
Objective: Maintain the visual appeal and historic integrity of downtown buildings while encouraging beautification.
1.5.1 As part of the city-wide design guidelines, create specific standards for historic downtown. Additionally, launch a public art program to beautify public spaces, such as alleys, with culturally relevant murals.
